My first memory of intentionally seeking alcohol is from around age 7 or 8. My parents, ever the party hosts, always had an adult punch bowl, speckled with fruit cocktail, as an offering. It was often a game amongst the kids to see who could sneak some fruit from the bottom without getting caught. This round was particularly successful, with such an abundance of boozy fruit, we were all left in fits of giggles. The following morning my friend from down the hall came to scavenge for residual party snacks. Not finding much left of desirable value, I snuck him the container of Haagen-Dazs my mom always had hiding in the freezer…and I grabbed the bottle of leftover champagne. In the hallway of our apartment building we sat, him shoveling down Butter Pecan, and me, taking the first of what would become many swigs from glass bottles, chasing feelings that were just always out of my reach, and that I would spend a lifetime trying to understand. 🖤🍾
