Something To Believe In
I once knew a man
Who lived amongst the stars
You couldn’t see them through the clouds
They were housed within his heart
He kept them like a secret
Guarded them with care
Projected himself in two dimensions
Hoping you’d never know they’re there
He tried to separate his life
What was felt, from what was seen
Believing the only safe existence
Was the space in-between
Though he was extraordinary
He didn’t dare accept the truth
Convinced his inner galaxy was dark
That his admirers need only proof
He somehow failed to realize
The stars were never hidden deep
They sparkled in his eyes
Escaped through words when he would speak
They told of his complexity
Tales of losses, draws, and wins
How that culminated in a compassion
He radiated from within
Enriching the world around him
He touched lives every day
Sometimes just by listening when it mattered
Even when he didn’t know what to say
Showing strength where others faltered
Inspiring hope when all seemed lost
A true light in darkness
Regardless of personal cost
He disregarded any praise
Certain the stars were to blame
But it had always been him
He and the stars were one in the same
