#OnThisDay a year ago, I stood beside two of my nearest and dearest as they entered into wedded bliss. Never has joy been more palpable. Memories of that day still fill my heart. The following is the speech I wrote that morning:
“I’ll be honest, as I sat down to write this speech, I began to panic a bit. When I thought about Dee, Michelle, and the complex journeys they took to get here, it felt overwhelming to try to encapsulate it all in a few short words. I wracked my brain to come up with a way to fully express how dynamic and incredible their story truly is. Maybe a puppet show, or a poem, or a song and dance number, anything that was more than words, because words could never do it justice. In my moment of panic, I did what we all do in times of need, I leaned on someone I love. They told me “don’t over complicate it…say a few nice words from the heart, and then you get the open bar!”.
After sitting with that for a few minutes, I realized it really is that simple. The journey is complicated. Love isn’t. All of us are gathered here today because we’ve been a part of that journey. We’ve helped dry tears and drown sorrows. We’ve celebrated the triumphs, supported life changes, we’ve been sounding boards, and voices of reason, and alibis. Every new love, every fresh heartbreak, every hardship, every victory, every bump in their separate roads brought us all here to this moment, to celebrate the joining of their paths.
Dee and Michelle are amazing women, with big, beautiful hearts, and a tremendous capacity to love. As much as that may have speckled their lives with heartache at times, it’s also what gave them experience to draw from to recognize true love when they finally found it. It brought them to this moment, pledging their love forever, surrounded by those they love most, the helping hearts who got them here. So here’s to us! We did good! Dee and Michelle, you’re welcome! May every day be filled with the same love, laughter, and kindness you bring into the world.” 💖
